who can tell me about PTF's?

So, due to inability to hire any quality RCA's, PM said he wants to make office formula.

Here's my concern.

He said I (senior RCA)  and next senior would become PTF's and vacate our respected Aux routes. (Im in RMPO) .

I know its a career position which is great. What I dont like is that when a career position route opens it automatically goes to PTF. There are only 5 K routes in the 2 offices combined to date.

So, am I understanding correctly I would have no choice but to become PTF to ensure I get next open FT route, lose my 36 hr Aux in exchange for maybe 2 or 3 days on a K route relief days?

Funny feeling I might need some lubricant

I am no expert on this.  But you cannot be forced to take the PTF position ?  So if you turn down the PTF position, and PM person hires 2 ptf's you would be number 3 in line for a f/t position ?  Approx how long is the wait for a f/t position ?

The downside of the PTF position (IMO), you would get all the crap days.

Good Luck !!!

rca4ever1 --"due to inability to hire any quality RCA’s, PM said he wants to make office formula."

--  First things first, there are hoops the PM will have jump through to create PTF positions.  Step 4 ( F-57 ).

--  Becoming a Formula Office does not stop manglement from continuing to seek applicants for RCA positions.

--  How many of the K-route carriers have submitted the 120-Day notice to get a sub?

--  How many 120-Day notices have expired?

--  How many RCA's currently in the offices?

--  PTF's are assigned a minimum of 2 K-routes to a maximum of 5 K-routes.   Of course, relief days will have to change to accommodate the PTF's.

--  Any other routes in the offices besides the 5-K routes and the AUX?

"He said I (senior RCA)  and next senior would become PTF’s and vacate our respected Aux routes. (I'm in RMPO) ."

--  The PTF positions have to be posted for bidding, not simply given to the senior RCA's.   If the two senior RCA's bid correctly, they will become PTF's.   Any eligible substitute rural carriers and RCA's who have completed their probationary period ( 90-work days or 1 calendar year ) can bid on the PTF positions.   Those not wanting to take the PTF position, don't bid.   However, whenever a regular route becomes vacant, the ranking PTF will get the vacant route.    In fact, MUST take the vacant route.  If you don't want to become a PTF, don't bid.

--  Also PTF's can get called upon to fill in where ever needed.   Do a word search for "PTF" on the contract.

PS -- At 36 hours, you have a "substandard" route, not an AUX.

rca4ever1 -- "What do you mean substandard??"

--  M-38's Section 212.3 -- Auxiliary Routes -- An auxiliary route is one which normally evaluates under 35 hours per week.

--  The Table of Evaluated Hours for Regular Rural Routes ( pages 12 + 13 of the contract ) lists an H41 ( 40:30 to 41:29 standard hours ) as the lowest regular route.

--  Substandard is an unofficial term that may be applied to those routes with standards hours between 35 and 40:29.

--  Usually "substandard" comes in to play when a regular route drops below 40:30, due to mail count or some other reason.

--  The M-38's Section 841.72 mentions "substandard" routes in regards to the feasible of consolidation actions.  ( but does not mention the standard hour range )

--  I confess to jumping the gun on "substandard" terminology without knowing if your 36-hour AUX was ever a regular route and on its way down, or if it was always an AUX, working on its way up.

--  Any one got anything else??

Let me add, your PM needs to move the office to Formula BEFORE he can post a PTF position. Then if there are 120-Day letters coming due, he could establish PTF positions. Those positions MUST be approved by District as in the PM writes District to request however many PTF positions he thinks he needs. District will come back with a "yes" or "no". If it's a yes, the PM will be advised as to how many positions will be approved & how many routes will be primary to each PTF position. Just getting approval can be a lengthy process.

if approved, the PTF will have 2-5 primary routes and CAN be used over 2nds & 3rds & for Sunday Amazon. You will have to give up the Auxiliary route but if you want to go Regular, you'll have to do it. The plus is your "career" starts with the PTF so when you go Regular, your "step doesn't change but just continues on.

Good luck!
