Tipping RCA's During the Holiday's

We have two RCA's in our office. One has been on hold down for about a year, the other is my sub. My sub runs the Aux route and covers my K day. I always tip my sub 20% at the minimum, she does a great job and the customers love her. In fact many of them also leave her a tip. Last year I tipped the other RCA $40.

Do you guys tip all RCA's in your office or only your sub and ones that regularly run your route?

I split my tips with all them not just mine they deserve it running my packages on over burden days I get over 300 a day and sometimes i get about 400 plus it is insane

I keep them feed and happy if they have ever helped or run my route. Narrows it down to just one sub out of currently 5 who gets basically everything. I will also give them something outside work when both of us are off the clock to avoid any issues. They care a great deal and I want to make sure I respect the heck out of that.

What I did when I had a sub was this. I figured out roughly how many days he worked and gave him that portion of my stuff.

So when I went back on my days, he worked around 20% of the days. So I gave him 25% of what I got for the year.

This year all mine. I have basically work every day using several different subs. I will probably end up getting them gas card for 25 or 50 bucks (They have only worked my route each about 4 or 5 times). Other RCA I used went to another job.

I've worked 18 Rural Routes and 1 City in various offices, only 1 Lady Regular Carrier I worked with loved to give gifts to the RCA assigned on her route. Nobody else does anything for subs in this area.

Last year I gave my sub $50, she was only in the office 3 months at that point.

This year. We have 2 subs. One has never run my route started a month ago and been running a vacant route since they started. ( I don’t think they will be here much longer. It hasn’t been going well.)

The 2nd started a 2 days ago and is running a vacant Aux.

So…I’m not tipping either. As they should get something on these 2 vacant routes. Next year…we will see. But in all honesty I don’t get much cash. It’s mostly candy and baked good (which I generally won’t eat unless I know the person well.) and $5-$10 gift cards to the local Convenience store.

Edit: we have one sub. One resigned this morning. The 2nd asked if he should give 2 weeks notice or longer. Sounds like I will be solo by Christmas, 2 FT routes 1 AUX.

Yea, I have a sub assigned to my route and I give him $100, I have a young boy number 2 that I like too, so I'll give him $50.

You know... I had different experiences with different subs.... some would leave all the tips and presents they picked up on the case on the days when I was off.... some would leave none of what they picked up.... so, some were obviously pocketing all of the tips and gifts they picked up, even those clearly intended for the Reg (me).... I really didn't care, but I did have some customers ask me if I got their tips or gifts, and I had to say I didn't.... it really doesn't bother me, but it does make a difference on what you may or may not want to share with the subs....

I just gave my sub any Christmas gifts with his name on them. There were lots of things for him, and me, because our customers appreciated our work. I trained my sub to do things right, and he did a good job.

I always liked to make sure that I left at the PO all cookies and such from the crazy cat lady that always had about 100 cats at her house.... gawd knows what is really in those brownies....

I offered a brief "standup" to RCA's outlining rules for collection and process for subs on routes in our offices, so that they were certain to only take anything that was meant for the postal carrier, not their neighbor, and to annotate the name and address on any gift so that the regular could offer thanks to the giver when they returned. Also to be careful in pickup of outgoing mail, as sometimes a gift card is within that group -- if it's dumped in dispatch they'll never see it again. With continuous new RCA's many who've never been through Peak it's good info and a refresher for other newer ones too.

I'm guessing every office has some kind of mistake like this....I was trying to avoid a problem with my little talk....a few of our newer folks are well educated but not that smart.....

I never kept money but, I did give my rcas gift cards as appreciation. Some I never gave anything to. They got paid the same as I and never did the job with any interest. I would bring in office goodies or cater occasionally. Always according to ELM. I dealt with difficult leadership and wasn't going to give anyone a chance to get me fired for taking money or liquor. Not worth my retirement check.

It did piss off many people who worked routes after I did and customers no longer have gave because I had returned it.

I know a carrier who gave back a $20 dollar bill to a customer and explained we weren't allowed to accept cash.... it made the guy so mad that after that he wouldn't even wave at the mail carrier....

I was always nice and explained it wasn't worth getting fired for. I did mention a cold water or Gatorade in the 120 F summer was super appreciated.

I remember reading on a city side site (maybe PEN?) at one time about a city side peep who delivered some high-rise luxury apartments in Chicago, and he hauled in about $10k in tips every year... js.... that'd be a nice little bonus....
