Well...after 10 months and a recent winning bid for a PTF position, I called it quits.

The people at my old office were great as were the people in my new office, (yes, even the PM's lol).

But the Post Office is broken.

Averaging 170 packages a day, making 2-3 trips a day, being exhausted everyday and being a single dad and not seeing my kids....it's not worth it.

Not to mention $5000 in repairs to my Wrangler, plus payments, plus gas, plus insurance on $.72 a mile.

When I made PTF, I was psyched for the benefits...until I realized that working 2 days a week on my string covered the benefits payments...and that's about it.

So...the Post office sucks...the Union REALLY sucks....but the people are among the best I have ever worked with.

Good luck to you all...and to the the newbies....

Get out while you can!

Much as I hate to say it... you're making the right decision, imo...

Just a Gunslinger got on one of these threads the other day and was all pumped up about how he was on track to make good $$$ money this year by working all sorts of OT and such as a PTF...

I pointed out that when he gets PROMOTED to Regular Carrier, on Table 2, on a 40K route, he'll be making $30-something thousand a year, and that's before all of the deductions for benefits and retirement, taxes, and so on, and so forth... not exactly headed for the life of luxury...

Sad that the Gunslinger may be making MORE now as a part-timer, than he may EVER make once he gets to a career position... but, this is the new reality... just sayin'... do the math... ?

Best wishes - Fortunately there are a lot of good private industry jobs sprouting all over that DO care about adults supporting a family.

I wish more would take notice how the bottom is falling out. That means USPS management / NRLCA / AND Table 1 Regulars.

I think you're right... anytime some of the Table 2 peeps start taking a good look at what the future holds for them... well, let's just say, in MANY cases it's been a rude awakening...

I think many are still under the false impression that they're gonna have the same kinda salaries and benefits that the old-timers now have... sorry Charlie, but that's just not the case... you've been sold out, and sadly MANY are just not even aware... on purpose by the USPS & NRLCA??? You decide... Kept in the dark and fed ?...

I wish you the best. I remember, many decades ago, the regular carriers would warn anyone expecting to go regular that the pay didn't match the rca take home rate. I don't think any of us believes until they see the deductions for various benefits from your pay. In the '80s I was taking home $1200-1800 a pp as an rca. My first check as a regular was $633. Talk about shock. I thought I would have it easy Street as a regular. I can't fathom why anyone would stay at tables 2+4. I'm seriously hoping our fearless leadership is addressing this concession given by a shortsighted arbitrator.

Sometimes when I hear mgrs talking about how fabulous their job is, all I can think is, " You are dancing on the lido deck of the Titanic."

See you wouldn't want to be you. As a higher table REG if this was an aware result in my RCA days my interest in this gig would have been zero. My life of luxury as a solo/strange is a struggle to own a home and make ends meet in a depressed area. I'm not keeping up with neighbors who are credit happy while I am not credit ambitious adding to debt happy except for daily life bills.

Good luck.

The USPS & NRLCA have kept this issue all hush-hush... let's just don't talk about it, and they'll all be too stupid to figure out that we even gave them this HUGE pay cut... we'll create this RCA shortage, and let them work all sorts of OT as RCAs & PTFs... and they'll think they have it made in the shade... THEN by the time they make Regular, they'll have too much time invested to just quit... GOTCHA!!!!??

Has anyone ever just skipped out on becoming Regular and stayed as an RCA for all the reasons before mentioned?

Yes, more and more a choosing not to go regular. But be careful of taking a PTF position as that also leads to regular when a route is available.

For a while I thought maybe an Auxiliary would be a good option. Work few hours, earn a little leave, steady money, but then they say auxiliary has to help when job done for the day up to 12 hours. Well , that blew that. Regulars never have to do double duty. Thought auxiliary may be good permanent gig, but now thinking RCA is.

To me it's insane that nowadays the conversation has become... do I really have to become a Regular... back in the day, all of the subs thought they were gonna have it made in the shade when they made Regular...

And so now we have peeps that basically have NO real benefits nor job security, wondering if they'd be better off staying in their current suck@$$ job, than taking a Regular carrier job... wow, just wow...

Why are you surprised? Back in the day the Subs did have it made when they became regular, I will make more as an RCA than as a regular so why are you surprised we have educated ourselves to know this and would consider the possibility of staying RCA's? The game has changed, seems the players must too...…..

Have 2 district wide bids right now. Both POV. One in our office will be going district wide too.

Alrighty... if you want NO retirement, and basically NO benefits, yeah, I guess staying a RCA is an option... sad as it may be... just is really sad to see that the job has been driven so far down in the dirt that you now believe this is your best option... everybody has to decide for themselves, I suppose... so at $17 and change.... what does a 40 hour week give you??? Somewhere in the low $30-something thousand a year... or are you hoping to get "lucky" and work yourself in to an early grave with lots of OT??? Yeah, that sounds pretty appealing...

Already have great health insurance and a retirement income and social security in a few years(if it is still around) to old to retire from this gig. So may as well make as much as I can now and call it a day.....

I really appreciate what you are saying about your chosen career, in my previous career I also felt there were many many changes that brought the organization to a place I had never seen and no longer wanted to be a part of...…….I totally understand how you are shocked to the core to see the decline......Hail, I have seen USPS decline in my short 5 years here...……...

I've been here 2 decades, and have seen nothing but decline... and it's not looking like it will ever go the other direction... a career with the USPS is now, imo, a mediocre career, if even that...

For somebody, like yourself, that is just looking for some extra cash going in to retirement, sure it may be fine for that... but would anyone really believe it's a great job for a young person looking to support a family???

Yes areas in where I live , the living is pretty cheap compared to others I see here AND for one person in the marriage had this job and the other person a higher paying one I think it would be very doable.
