$570 million New scanner contract

Check your math. $1,900 each
Yes, indeed, a dropped zero here and added zero there and you might talk real money. Good catch, I should have been more careful, but my intent was to talk about what this "contract" was. My reading was that USPS was handing over a specific amount of money for an unspecified amount of scanners to be delivered at an unspecified time, while USPS was planning on starting to use them next year.
300,000 is a fairly large number and one can guess that current inventory and current production would mean that it takes an unspecified amount of time for them to arrive. Rather like it seems that Amazon ordered a large number of vehicles with targets given as to beginning and over what period of time they would increase.
Thanks to Windintheface we can see what the new scanner should be and guess on it's capabilities being able to accomplish functions required, but then I am ignorant about the current scanner specs too. Looks to be smartphone size except considerably thicker and heavier. Been too long since I handled one regularly but sounds overall an improvement. Comes down to just how they work in the field.

No problem. The new scanner is cheaper than the current one. Close to $3,000 each for the paperweights we use now.

"Route Zero Niner, this Raven Leader...return to nest immediately for additional parcel extraction due to inbound drop shipment"

As is typical in this age, very little information provided.
Does this mean that they are committing to buying 300,000 scanners with a price of $190 each?
Does it mean that they are giving the company $570 Million and hope to be able to get 300,000 scanners or so at some date unknown?
Specs would have been useful. How long are they supposed to last? Are they readily upgradeable and good for foreseeable future?

$190 each???

Is there any way to find out what UPS paid for theirs? What is Fedex and Amazon using? Is there anything we could buy off the shelf that would to the job for less?

How much business are the scans really generating? Are we getting parcel business because we have scanning or because we are bottom feeders?

What's more important?.....High tech little doohickies which make management feel good....Or....New vehicles so low life last rung of the ladder peons don't burn alive in death traps?....Need you ask?....Wow...new doohickies...

New Idea.... Let's give every district manager and above a personal vehicle free on USPS.....Make them drive LLV's.

i was fishing after work today, when my phone rang. another problem with a touch screen, is punching the screen with gloves on. a real problem for those of us in cold climates.

@MON..I use mechanic repair gloves for those brutal cold days and when it's the end of the frigid season when boxes are wet I wear a latex glove underneath to keep hand dry.

I can see it now,,, Cut pinky or thumb tip off right/left hand glove blow on that finger tip for warmth so we can tap screen to scan or type in a name for a sig con. I hope the keyboard letters on this device is set up like a typewriter.

There are gloves that are touchscreen friendly. I’m in the south so I am fine with fingerless when it gets frigid for a few days.
