How many RCA's have quit during their first 6 months in your office over the past year?

I asked my carrier academy trainer this same question. He is in a very small office with only 4 routes. His answer was.. Just one but they didn't treat him right. He declined to go into the detail of how the newly hired RCA wasn't treated fairly.

We had one who never showed up in the office after his academy training (he did his shadow day). We’ve had two transfer to other offices (better opportunities/more work) and another who got a job at a nearby USPS plant. Going back to 2019, one quit because he was worried about Covid (he’d been with us over a year). One resigned after she got into an accident. I’m in a relatively small (10 routes, all rural) office. Our bigger problem is getting people in the job, not so much quitting once they start.

Do you feel like your office is currently under staffed?

I’m not sure. I know contractually each route is entitled to a sub, but with that many subs in our office, there’s not enough work to go around. I was an RCA for a long time and it seemed to work best when there were about three of us—we all got to work quite a bit and the regulars managed their time off so there never were too many routes off at the same time. I should add there’s only 1 K route in my office.

After the 2 month long hiring process, the latest one went to orientation, came back, did shadow day on Saturday, then quit that Monday before academy. Husband got a better job with benefits. She only applied for the insurance. That was 2 weeks ago.
They had a shadow day before Academy? Well, atleast that's better then they did me. Threw me to the wolves before Carrier Academy and no shadow day. (Unless you count watching the regular case mail for a hour).

worked a Sunday followed by 3 days running parcels Then shadow day. Then I did academy. Between academy worked another sunday. so you are not alone. I still wonder why I stayed some days.

We have had one quit close to 6 months in. They were the newest hire and realized the were looking at 10+ years before career. Have had 2 new hires and one transfer since then. Funny thing is I see the new hires and transfer 1 day a week. They send the new rcas everywhere within 50 miles and keep me and the senior rca along with aux at home office 6-13 days a week.

We've probably had a dozen quit in the past few months. Many more didn't show up to academy so I don't count them. It takes too long to get hired. We've also had 5 regulars resign in the past 18 months or so, and one more is going to or so I've been told. It's so bad that they now have 8 PTF positions up for bid so many of the subs we have, who don't have their 90 days in, won't be eligible, and I guess those positions will go district-wide. Then those RCAs will have out of towners jump them in seniority and I bet they'll quit too. Our city is about 30 rural routes between two offices.

We've found that about 3 RCA's for every ten routes works well for our offices. Enough work to keep everyone busy, regulars work together on leave. Subs have rent to pay also, they aren't sitting around watching Netflix waiting for a call for a few extra bucks.

I haven't kept up.... what is your current status.... are you working or training, or what??? 🤷‍♂️

9 new hires 3 said no on shadow day 2 said screw it after training 1 walked out after being with the regular about 3 hours 2 said no way am i staying here someone is going to kill me and yes that is the vibe in the building and 68 cca's have walked and 14 pse's so the only reason I am not working Sundays on Sunday is no way to pay me. 18 rural route's 1 RCA and 2 PTF's working 14 hours a day 2 route's sit on the floor most day's.

Between my office, and its two remotes, we have 1 route with no assigned carrier , and another with no sub. This is out of 5 total routes.
Been trying to hire for 8 months. Have managed to get 2 "hired". One came in to see what the job entailed before the academy, and quit.
The other goes to the academy and quit on shadow day.

6 route rural office. 2 new subs....1 lasted 2 weeks, couldnt believe the amt of work(we have Amazon), and quit. The other was great. Lasted 6 weeks and got a job paying 1k/wk and quit. We cannot compete with the number of available jobs around here. No one else has applied....btw....the poom carried a route....that's how bad the help situation is around here. No hope

Our offices have been asking for help for well over a year. District says no applicants. They did source one, who's commute was three hours each way, so that was clearly a no go after paid training. Sourced another, but the candidate already had an option in to transfer to a location closer to home, as their commute was two hours each way. End of candidates. With District jobs in limbo, nobody on the horizon. Takes months to get one of those nobodys off the rolls as District must approve clearance. With that candidate still showing, District won't prioritize hiring. Talk about a viscous circle! Union DR has tried to help, but the offices really are trying to hire, so there's not much they can offer.

We've had one RCA applicant even show up for an interview in the last 24 months. They quit after about 3 months because their old job wanted them back and offered roughly double their RCA payrate.

Decent person. They even hesitated for a day or two feeling guilty before we told them to just escape while they could.

I guess I should also say the only way to get a day off is be the POOM or PM. The city side is going to the doctor to get notes and tell us the only reason to be a Rural is so you can get 1 day off otherwise you poor guys need a union this crap is unfair this is from a craft making over 100,000 in overtime and more while I get paid 8 hours a day on a 40 K been working 55 to 65 hours a week no k days and the 8 hours time and a half when your working a 12 hour day on your k day is a kick it the teeth and this is why to quote my area rep. You are retiring because your Lazy. 31 years that count + 4 years as a RCA working 6 days a week on a rote that was held up by my union. My body is broken and I have done my time 3 weeks and a hart felt HI YO FU_K YOU AWAY!!!! end of rant.

We finish carrier academy tomorrow. I was still asleep this am at 9:32 when my Postmaster left me a voicemail telling me I was on the schedule to work Amazon Sunday. It's one thing to tell us the day before, but I feel like this is strike three with this office. Very disorganized and potentially toxic. I am not interested in a job that requires me to be on call for $19.06 a hour. Plus I can't plan anything on a day off. My Postmaster knows I have been in Rural Carrier Academy and that it wraps up tomorrow. I guarantee you I am the only person in my Carrier Academy class that has been asked to work Amazon Sunday before completeing Academy. It's one thing to tell us the day before they want us to work, but screw being on call and told your on the schedule the day they want you to work.

When you're sick, use sick leave. If you're out over two days and need a doctor's note provide one. All it has to say is you're sick per doctor. Management can try to discipline you for "patterns" or "abuse" of sick leave (which in my opinion is BS, they gave us the benefit to use, and it's ours to use as necessary) but if you're going to be sick often I'd get a doctor's note as backup. They can't do anything then but interview you.
