Parade Delay

What happens when you are delayed by a parade for almost 2 hours while running an aux route. Police make you stop and wait for the parade to finish.

Green card time for the delay?

Cliff Clavin -- "What happens when you are delayed by a parade for almost 2 hours while running an aux route. Police make you stop and wait for the parade to finish."

--  Manglement was unaware that a community parade was going to happen on area streets?

--  Did you call in and ask for further instructions? Such as: 1) The police have stopped me from delivering because of the parade, what should I do?  2) If I can turn around, do you want me to take another way to get to my route?, or 3) If I can turn around, can I deviate and deliver portions of the route not affected by the parade?  Did you call the office, but would pick up.

--  Long ago ( 1983 ) and far away ( CA ), a rural carrier had to deviate to reach the mail route due to a train blocking the road for 30 minutes.  The situation resulted in Step 4 ( D-30 )....Not exactly applicable to your case, but go with it as an extenuating circumstance.

--  In part:  ...based upon the information in the file, this detour appears to have been necessary ( or in your case, being delayed by a parade - and the police ).  Therefore, it merits the criteria of Part 312, M-37 Handbook ( which evolved into the PO-603 ), concerning changes in the line of travel.  Whether this one-time detour ( 2-hour delay ) will result in increased compensation for the day in question must be determined by applicable contractual pay provisions to be applied locally.

--  In part:  Reasonableness and good faith application of Part 312, M-37 Handbook, is required by both parties at the local level.

--  Probably no one has a copy of the M-37 ( Morty-? ), so request 2 hours on the 1314-A.

--  However - if you finished the route under eval, you probably can forget about it getting the entire 2 hours - only what you were over eval by.

Management knew that they had a parade but would not let me start my route early to avoid the parade.

I could not turn around and there was in this instance no other way to detour. There was no need to call the office since they were aware of the parade and the route. It could have been avoided ONLY if they would have allowed me to start early, which they wouldn't.

Cliff Clavin -- "There was no need to call the office since they were aware of the parade and the route."

--  By calling in ( and if someone answered ) you would have "officially" started the "delay" clock.

--  I gather absolutely no way to get around the parade to reach your route.

--  Our former ASS ( Assistant State Steward ) used to tell us manglement has every right to mis-manage and they seem to take every opportunity to do so.

--  Any word if you'll get paid for waiting, at least part of the time?
