RDWL....Pros and Cons

Howdy All,
12 year regular (Table 1, Step 9) in need of some guidance and wisdom from those more knowledgeable than I. RI, DB, Ruckus, et al.
Down 4 Rca's in the last month, and losing a 5th to become regular once vacant (health issues) route comes up for bid. For the 1st time in my 12 years, I am being forced to work my K day on Monday for the 2nd week in a row. This week, I was given 2mro as my X; however, next week there is no day available for my X. It is RDWL time of the year. Gimme your pros and cons. This job has taken a toll on me physically to be sure, but wanting to weigh my options. I'm too far in to quit now!! Thanks in advance.....

I signed up for RDWL in 2008 when I was paying down my debt. (Pre-Amazon.)

They only used me once, on a big snow day.

If you want to take yourself off the list because they don't treat you well, (where would I get that idea,)
you can do so.

I personally find that Intermittent Fasting (IF) is a tremendous help with aches and pains.
After last Christmas' parcel torrent, I got swollen hands and pain. Pain goes away with 2 days of IF a week.
Swelling completely gone with 4 days of IF a week.
I don't take any aspirin, etc, but I do use turmeric, too.

So I can get off the list before next years RDWL w/o consequences?

Also, the fewer hours you work between the end of the guarantee period and the beginning of the Christmas OT period, the higher your rate for OT pay during the Christmas OT period.

I'm taking Veterans Day week off. ;)
Yes, I am taking a couple of days coinciding with Columbus day as well.

I think it just involves a letter, asking to be removed from the list.
(I seem to recall a requirement to work one day before coming off the list. )

But yes, you're not stuck on it if you change your mind.

I've been on the RDWL since it started. I paid for a route car with it and made an extra $4000/per year minimum. I've been paid, after filing grievances, well over $3000 for sitting home due to management trying to not work me, "to save $". I think everyone should be on the list, it is a good way to "make" management hire subs. If they are paying out 150% pay every weekend, that adds up kinda quick, and they are "encouraged " by their manager to do something about it. If you don't like it you can get off of it a maximum if a week after you sign a letter requesting to be taken off the list. The reason it is a maximum of a week, is because you can only get off when you aren't scheduled.

Goof info! Thank you!

In my area they started giving the local mngt some grief about paying so many DACA 5's... so I really think signing the RDWL is the smart move, it gives you the option to take either a DACA 3 or 5... if you don't sign it, then you can only get a DACA 3...

It's sort of office dependent... if you don't want to work your relief day, and there are enuf others on the RDWL, then it may make sense to not sign it... if you're gonna have to work regardless, then you might as well sign it for the additional pay option (DACA 5)...

A few years ago, I worked a J Route schedule on a K Route... I just took a DACA 5 every other week, while sharing a sub from a J Route... did that for over a year, and the extra $$$ money was nice... finally they got tired of paying the money and hired some subs...

So anyways, I always sign the RDWL, and it works for me.... but for some people, it might make sense to not sign, if you don't want the extra work...

-- A lot will depend on the sub situation of your office. Manglement's ability to use RCA's from other offices will also affect the RDWL.

-- If you want ( need ) the money, be sure to sign up so you can take Code 5 ( 150% pay with no X-Day ) - as long as you body can handle it. Otherwise it will be Code 3 = 50% pay and an X-Day within 12 weeks as scheduled by manglement. Different set of rules from the beginning of the new Guarantee Year until the end of the Christmas No-Overtime Period ( 12 OCT to 21 December )

-- Code 5 counts towards 2240 but not 2080.

-- District tends to get nosy when it sees a lot of Code 5's.

-- As long as you are not already scheduled to work, you can tell manglement you want off the RDWL ( probably better in writing with a date stamp on it )

-- Check the April 2019 edition of the national magazine as well as the April and September 2018 editions. The Question Box section addressed the RDWL.

-- Step 4 ( R-95 ) also deals with the RDWL.

-- The signing up time frame is getting close - manglement should have the list posted in the office on 21 September 19.

Rcflyn et al -- Several years worth of back issues of the national magazine are available in the "archive" section of "magazine" inside the NRLCA home page.

-- Have to be a member to "look behind the curtain".

Thanks bt! All good stuff. I don't get the association tag anymore, as I got out last March. No sense paying the entitled to be more entitled for doing squat. Would be nice to have the choice of Code 3 or 5. I know the sign up is close, hence my query for info. Your input is greatly appreciated!!
