RCA's not scanning packages at porch

Thought I would bring this topic back up and recommendations on how to fix this, I have a newly sub or will be transferring to my route and I asked him if he is scanning packages at door and he states NO, all I could think of is you do know that you are supposed to be doing this and it will be your paycheck. He is moving to my route because it's a 44k and wants more money but in the long run, if you don't want to do what we will eventually get paid for why bother, your here for a paycheck but your willing to skip over the part that is going to make your paycheck, I don't get it. How will this affect my paycheck? I don't want a sub who is just running to get done and screw my route up. I am very concerned I have been doing everything for over a year on this and to have some wet behind the ear newby come in and kill everything I have been working on doesn't sit well with me. Not to mention I walk a lot of my packages, he drives up to the closest he can to the porch, I can understand if your old but he is only 24, naturally I am talking about short driveways. I sure hope the union is looking into this or exclude these RCAs in what is going to make our paycheck.

DR's oversee academy's. Write a scathing letter to him/her with your concern. They should then write a group email to all trainors to emphasize scannig at the door.

Or you can pull a move I have done. Get customers that you know and trust. And have them complain that they didn't receive their packages. Investigations will ensue, and the RCA will learn real quick, in order to CYA, to start scanning at the door. Of course you can gently remind them, and then have customers call like a week later. Oh...i found it in the bushes.

He knows he is supposed to scan packages at door but is not he has been with us for 6 months subbing on another route which is only a 40k, the regular over there are not happy about it either and is happy to get rid of him now I have to deal with it. I believe this will be a hot topic when RRECKs comes knocking and figured maybe we could nip it in the bud before it gets here. He is delivering in the old way and days, we have a new way coming that we all have to adapt to for our paycheck, its the same principle as going through a mail count and not going to any training on counting, and wonder why you got 2-hour cut.

gerl2 -- " I have a newly sub or will be transferring to my route and I asked him if he is scanning packages at door and he states NO,.."

-- Any of you customers have a camera doorbell?

-- If so and have video of the RCA not scanning at the door, have the customers "invite" the PM to watch.

-- Maybe having the PM "suggesting" scanning at the door could get the RCA to do so. ( or not! )

-- If the RCA is not impressed that the lack of scanning will be affecting the paycheck, hope the RCA sees greener pastures with another route.

Explain that if the scanning is not done correctly...the route will likely lose its k day and he will need to find new work. If he works the rt 1 day a week and averages 50 trips to door a day, the new system will cost you 50× 5 minutes =4.1 hours. Just in parcels. If they are speeding or running stops thats more time. Just be friendly in explaining he's running himself out of a job because his numbers will count towards the whole. Many rcas are thinking their actions don't mean anything with the new system. When theirs are going to likely be the most critical in keeping days off.
The new system will bite all of the runners.
BTW, the academy trains in the program, in writing, in slides, in practice: to scan it only where you will potentially leave the item. Whether its at a mailbox or a door or at the barn. They didn't pick that up at academy. They watched a runner.

This Thread gives me thought to something I’ve wanted clarified.... is it true that the scan is MEASURED and cleared when the final beep (zip code) clears? Our station manager assures us so as he wants accurate scans. So as long as clear at the door with the zip I’m good right?

I thought where you actually scan the item is the way it works, not where you finish the scan.

Administrators feel free to move this if necessary. The topic at the start of this thread reminded me of the old style record player for vinyl records. In the big picture it worked as designed but it also could be stuck going round and round and playing nothing or it might keep repeating the same song over and over again.

Except for RRECS all the problems are the same as when I started many years ago and I now have been retired for awhile.

Both RCAs and regulars when possible hurry to complete the day's work as soon as possible so than can go to their next job, be with family, or sit the shade and drink beer. If your PM doesn't object many carriers are willing to work off the clock (contribute to the bump) to accomplish this.

If your problem happens to be a pet peeve of your DR or ADR they will work for you but if it not a priority for them you get minimum effort.

I have confronted national officers and state and local boards when I felt their priority was what was best for the union but not necessarily the carriers and that did not make me very popular.

As a retired carrier and convention delegate my vote was usually one of the few no votes.

Nothing will ever change if as a carrier you will not make a stand on the various issues. If you attend the meetings, vote on the issues, know the contract and the 603, are willing to make waves at any and all levels of the union and the PO you have the right to complain. If you go along to get long you are the only person to blame. If you are not willing to file a grievance because it might upset the apple cart with either fellow carriers or management everything will just keep going around and around.

I did not win every challenge but eventually management would say we need to make some change and when I told them they could not do that they normally backed down. Sometimes they wanted to see the Step 4 or the contract but occasionally if I just told them it was a no go they just backed off.

Some will say," I tried it and it accomplished nothing". It maybe did not work for you but the more that everyone make waves the better chance someone will succeed eventually. Someone will reply to this saying nothing will ever change and I say it definitely will not as long as most carriers just go with the flow.
I read some members of the national board are conducting a study on RCA retention. More benefits, higher salary, quit using them as slaves, provide a vehicle for them if they request one would be a good start.

If you talking to the individual doesn’t get the point across. Ask managment to talk to him/her. If that doesn’t work let your customers know and have them start calling in about missing packages.
as an rca academy was VERY CLEAR about scanning packages at the point you drop them off at.

Nobody is really sure how it's supposed to work.... my prediction is, it'll be a $#!+ show.... glad I'll likely never work under RRECS.... as I head out the door, I'll bid you all a SEE YA, SURE WOULDN'T WANNA BE YA!!! ? ?:giggle:?

I can't believe anyone really thinks rrecs is still coming going on 6 years now.

I wear a holster and take it with me, even to the bathroom(maybe I will get paid for that).

It works well for locating a misdeliverd package sometimes.

Why would running affect the way it judges distance, for that matter, I thought it measured from point to point?

When I became a rural carrier many years ago, none of us rurals realized that management had a secret time clock. We all went in and did our job and that was that. That was what was so great, get in and get out and go do your own thing. If everyone was suppose to work like they punched a time clock why was this evaluated system ever implemented? Now our hopes are on RRECS to increase the bump again to anger the clock watchers! No side will ever be satisfied till we follow each other around the route chained together, so we know one is not cheating the other. Still this is a non-profit service but for some reason cutting and squeezing rurals is the name of the game. What is the reason? Because management has a hold of the cookie jar, and employees are forbidden to see all the cookies but get only crumbs.

Put us on a time clock and forget the tricks and scams! Scan the damn package where ever as long as it's delivered. If you have no life after work take your sweet time and everyone will get paid justly. But here is the rub to figure out 40 hours worth of work for all types of different people. Put Johnny on RT 1 and he completes it in 42 hours a week, but if Betsy carries same route, it takes her 55 hours. MMMUMM? How do we fix this? We waste time and more money figuring out a pay system that hurts and cheats every carrier. Got it! GET IT!
