RRECS: Parcel Time

I've been going through the study results, and next up is parcel time.

So, the good news: if you are hauling the 'zon to doorsteps, you can expect to make some real time on your parcels.

If you are mainly delivering to parcel lockers, expect small gains. If you mainly deliver to mailboxes, expect some small losses. :(

But from what I've read in the study results, the difference between small/medium parcels in the mailbox (and a slight time loss) and a large parcel (and a BIG time gain) is whether or not you take the parcel to the door. I imagine they will eventually somehow distinguish by dimensions, but if they don't, then I'd say take everything to the door and really stick it to them!

The program is here. You need:

1) daily avg parcels delivered to mailboxes
2) daily avg parcels delivered to lockers
3) daily avg parcels delivered to doorstep

If you want to use my walking and driveway simplifications:
4) daily avg steps (this is in the office getting parcels, and walking to and from delivery points)
5) daily avg driveway lengths
but you don't have to use these. Just leave all "0" in this part then add in your own calculations if you want.

Change to your numbers, click the "Run" button at the top, results at the bottom. Here is an example:

Code:
const MAILBOX_PARCELS = 40
const DOOR_PARCELS = 10
const LOCKER_PARCELS = 0

const NUMBER_OF_STEPS = 250

const DRIVE_LESS_THAN_A_POOL = 5
const DRIVE_A_POOL = 0
const DRIVE_A_FOOTBALL_FIELD = 4
const DRIVE_TWO_FOOTBALL_FIELDS = 0
const DRIVE_QUARTER_MILE = 1
const DRIVE_HALF_MILE = 0

...

Your previous parcel time was 150.00 minutes per week

Your cart time for parcels is 1.06 minutes per week
Your organize time for parcels is 87.75 minutes per week
Your mailbox parcel time is 40.10 minutes per week
Your locker parcel time is 0.00 minutes per week
Your door parcel time is 85.14 minutes per week
Your additional driving time for parcels is 22.74 minutes per week
Your walking time for parcels is 15.00 minutes per week

Your TOTAL new parcel time is 251.80 minutes per week

You will gain 101.80 minutes per week

* caveats:
1) The calculator assumes you are only delivering 1 package to a door. If, for instance, you take 2 packages to the same door, you will get less time. About 1 minute less per parcel --> 6 minutes less per parcel per week, I think, but this isn't entirely clear.
2) It also isn't clear how to calculate multiple trips to the same door (think 3 boxes of dog food in 3 knee buckling hauls).
3) There is a field for "Deliver Miscellaneous to the Door," but this, again, is not clear. I took it to mean taking mail with the packages, and is included.
4) It doesn't explicitly say scan time is built into these deliveries, but I'm assuming it is.
About #2 above, when carrying multiple "Heavy" packages to the door, I would say scan the package as "Delivered" when you put the box down. Next package you bring up do the same, etc. Complete the scan after each package...don't keep adding them to the first delivery.

As an RCA, I am not always privy to all the info that Regulars get during the week. So having said that, I have 2 questions for all you regulars:
1. Should we be carrying our scanners on our person when working in the office, especially when doing our parcel loading? (I keep my scanner with me whenever I get out to make a parcel delivery, NCBBU delivery, or any other dismount outside of the vehicle...I figure it is logging ALL my foot steps and the extra time out the vehicle.)
2. Should we be using the LOAD app on the scanner? Are we responsible for scanning each parcel as "Out for Delivery?" (I now see these scans on the opening screen, but have not used either of them, nor have I been directed to use them.)
Through this whole process, I have heard crickets in the office. When in the office on Saturdays, when most RCAs are in, nothing has been said...sad because it is 1/6 of the work days considered...and a day that now seems to be heavy on parcel, as most customers are home and requesting their packages be delivered that day.

How are they accounting for parcels with NO barcode/scan?...I have no parcel lockers and take a lot of photo mailers to the door??
Edit: I'm assuming I'll be getting walking distance time and drive/ mileage for driving around the townhouse development...?

I've said this before. To solve this issue, the clerks should slap an old, green DC sticker on it and scan it arrival at unit. That way, if the system actually works, the item would appear in the parcel look-ahead function. And, if someday the USPS obtains FedEx's and UPS's technology, the scanner could notify the carrier that there is a parcel. But not in my postal lifetime.

I have a non-Saturday relief day, so I'm there every Saturday... they never say anything or read anything to the RCAs... and then they always point out that RCAs have more accidents and so forth... so why not give them some of the safety talks, and driver observations and so forth??? :unsure:
There is a provision in the mail count for safety and service talks. Should have gotten credit for both the regular and sub.

Definitely agree on driver obs. But that would entail management working on a Saturday. As if.

Only one problem with this idea, I think. If the clerk puts a barcode sticker on the parcel, it will show up as arrival at unit, but there will be no address associated with that barcode. The address gets attached to the barcode when the item comes over the counter, or when the customer creates a shipping label. The parcel look-ahead wouldn't know where to put this parcel. The only advantage would be that both we and the clerks would get credit for the scan.

Exactly!!! When we listen to the safety talks, they always say RCAs are having the most accidents... but it's usually a bunch of Regulars they're talking to....

And, I got a grand total of 5 minutes weekly for safety talks on my mail count... probably not enuf to cover Saturdays for the subs too... ?

Obviously I am not an IT engineer. :ROFLMAO:

So, when we deliver a forwarded parcel (when we have to verify/change zip code), will we get credit for the delivery?

8127 time for safety or service beyond whatever credit given during count. If no talk is given or less than 5 minutes, I think we get 5 minutes as a matter of future allowance.

They have decided to take attendance during safety talks and require any reg or relief who were not present to read a printed copy of the talk. Also 8127 time.

Our safety talks have disappeared. No a one for over 2 months. A trend maybe? Another cut to our weekly time? Very fishy, especially with the heat and humidity.

Noticed that myself. Haven't had a Heat Stress Talk in a while, nor has the PM/Supervisor mentioned staying hydrated on route. As for other talks, not many at all.

Skierstmoritz et al -- "Our safety talks have disappeared. No a one for over 2 months. A trend maybe? Another cut to our weekly time? Very fishy, especially with the heat and humidity. "

-- In the case of "dissappearing" safety talks, might want to remind manglement that the PO-603 mentions on page 120, under Column 17 - Other Suitable Allowance: In part -- Weely safety talks MUST be conducted, and the actual time required ( usually 5 minutes per week ) recorded in column 17.

-- Ask your Assistant District Representative, if like manglement seems to think, that Safety Talks are only given during Count or are Safety Talks are to be given weekly ( and repeated for those not in attendance ) year-round.
